Customs

Planning a trip to London for shopping or any other place, the very foremost thing anyone should do is to evaluate the most recent news in customs. Passengers must have a clear idea about what they can take across the borders and what they cannot, and how much they have to pay for it. This has to be determined before the purchases are made abroad. The process is that passengers entering a new country and returning to their own country have to clear customs. The customs main aim is about ensuring nothing potentially harmful or prohibited items are brought inside the country. However, the customs department enquires every traveler if they wish to declare something. This is enquired so that the passengers can come out clearly with their purchases and also about the gifts received on their visit.

Customs play a significant role and the officials take care that nothing illegal gets transported from one place to another. This also includes fruits, plants, vegetables, alcohol, animals, meats and automobiles. These items are strictly prohibited. For instance, automobiles that are purchased from some other country should meet the safety requirements as well as the fuel emission requirements prior to being imported. Similarly, all the items that are crossing the borders are expected to be declared and these items must comply with the regulations of the country or else the customs have all the right to confiscate. The custom officials charge duty on clothes, electronics jewelry and furniture. However, any goods purchased out of the home country, is subjected to duty fee. The customs duty depends on the worth of the item. Hence, buying expensive electronics or jewelry should be done cautiously as there are certain countries that are subjected to 100% duty at the border crossings. This meant passengers have to pay identical amount while purchasing and as custom duty. This may turn to be highly expensive.

The customs have a set of exemption depending on the country visited. For instance, U.S. possessions are allowed duty free exemption for $1600. This includes any purchase except tobacco products and alcohol. These products are charged at a flat rate. Frequent travelers register in their mind the details about the standard exemptions. This meant that a passenger traveling out of his country many times in a month and happens to declare $400 on the very first trip, cannot look for any more exemption as he has used the entire allowance permitted for a period of 30 days. Similarly, a passenger traveling less than 48 hours cannot avail standard exemption. However, $200 worth items can be brought without duty fees charged. Gifts worth $100 can be sent as duty free, but gifts over $100 cannot be received in one day.
